Packing and Twitter

Filed under: Life, Website — Chris Ross @ 9:28 pm

Been packing this evening and was most pleased at the thunder storm that came and invaded the skies above Birmingham. It is still really warm but it has taken the edge off the warmth.

We move on Friday and I have to say I am really excited. The new place is really good and you can even see some photos that I posted to Flickr. (there is a button to Flickr on the left)

As I don’t really have the time to post updates, I using the oppotunity of twitter. To see the tweet feed check out http://twitter.com/darkrock

A new place

Filed under: Life — Chris Ross @ 9:35 am

I am currently sat here tapping out this post on my iPhone. I am sat in a camping chair, the radio is on in the background and I have a fantastic view out onto the sea. I’m in my new home-to-be and it feels pretty damn good. We do the real move next week which is going to be hardwork. We have to acquire a bed and arious other things. Let the packing comense!

iPhone 3G; Moving soon

Filed under: Life, iPhone — Chris Ross @ 8:39 pm

iPhone turned up on Friday. It rocks, has bucket loads of potential and it is all very exciting. Will talk more about it in the week when I’ve spent more time learning it.

The more exciting news is that we have found a place to move to. It is quite close to the sea:

House Location

We went down Friday evening and camped out at a very nice little campsite. Headed down to Hove in the morning and checked out a few properties. They were all exactly the same price and we feel that we might just have landed on our feet with the second place we looked at. The first place was find, needed some work but certainly was bad. The third place just seemed terrible having seen the second place. We ended up putting a holding deposit down and just have to provide the information required for the reference check. Once that is done and come back fine we can then start the move. At that point in time I can take some photos to give people an idea of where we are going to live. I think we are both really excited now that we can see where we are headed. On a side note, Hove is an odd place as they seem to grow temporary bus stops in blue buckets:

Temporary Bus Stop

On the way back, we grabbed some coffee from McDonalds and I had to take a picture of the toilet door. It looks cool:

I shall probably write some more about plans and the iPhone over the next week.

iPhone/iPod Touch App Store…

Filed under: iPhone — Chris Ross @ 11:42 am

… is now active.

I think I counted at least 4 applications that will make your screen go white.

About 13 different applications for working out tips.

One application for generating random numbers.

A plethora of various applications that just don’t seem to be that mature or well suited. There looks to be some nice games there, some free applications that are useful such as IGN (the ability to check a game review/score when in a game shop is really useful), Facebook and AOL instant messenger. There are some really good looking paid for applications as well, I bought OmniFocus that should allow me to sync my task tracking with my desktop and the iPhone.

I was disappointed to not see any real internet communication software. It would be good to have access to SFTP, ssh, MSN on the move and all those seem to be lacking in the App Store.

The coming months are going to be an interesting time for users and developers alike. To see whether or not applications sink or swim will be interesting.

Texas PI Law

Filed under: It's funny. Laugh. — Chris Ross @ 8:33 am

This is a curious law trying to be passed in the state of Texas. The general gist is that people working on computer repair are likely to have to require a PI (Private Investigator) license due to a miss-understanding/miss-wording of the law brief. There is a discussion over at slashdot and this gem came out:
