The weekend just gone, I headed up to Walney Island, Barrow-in-Furness to hang out, ride and have at the British Kite Surfing Association round 2 event.
The weekend was a good one although, to be fair, the wind wasn’t howling but the sun was shining.
I spent most of my time on land (having a couple of cheeky water sessions whilst the wind picked up) which wasn’t such a bad thing. There was only about 6 land-boarders out riding on Saturday but don’t let the number fool you, the list was quite distinguished (L. Wilby, M. Berry). Whilst riding with top fly riders, you can’t help but watch, feel inspired, see something they do and try it yourself. By the end of the session I’d cracked big floaty rotations – 360, 540 and 720 – with landing to toe-side, grabs whilst rotating and almost managed a 360 foot out. All in all I must have been out kiting for 5-6 hours in total on Saturday and was really pleased because I could feel the benefit from swimming. I am still buzzing now from the session, I’ve got so many ideas of what I could do now – I certainly want to try 360 inverts amongst a fist full of other tricks that look fun.
Saturday evening was spent in a local working mans club hired out for all the people who were connected to the BKSA event. There was a really good band called ‘Sevens’ who have just been signed. They were, unlike the crowd, full of energy and rocked out good and proper. I must confess that by this time, several beers down, I was exhausted and took the chance to grab a lift back to the camp site. Ended up having a really interesting conversation with Mark about kite films, effects, editing and his new venture KiteFreestyle TV.
Sunday was another windy and hot day. Had a cheeky fly on the water, but the wind died off soon after I went out. I practised some loops but there wasn’t enough wind to have fun. I ended up heading home and crashing out with a big smile on my face. Spent the evening with Emma and had a cheeky Chinese take-away to full fill the hunger that was rumbling inside me
All I can say is this: bring on the next session!
