Ocotopus

Filed under: It's funny. Laugh. — Chris Ross @ 6:02 pm

A guy walks into a bar with an octopus. He sits the octopus down on a stool and tells everyone in the bar that this is a very talented octopus. He can play any musical instrument in the world.”

Everyone in the bar laughs at the man, calling him an idiot.

So he says that he will wager 50 quid to anyone who has an instrument that the octopus can’t play.

A customer walks up with a guitar and sets it beside the octopus. Immediately the octopus picks up the guitar and starts playing better than Jimmy Hendrix. The guitar owner pays up the 50 quid.

Another customer walks up with a trumpet. This time the octopus plays the trumpet better than Miles Davis. The trumpet-owner coughs up the 50 quid.

Then Jim, a Scotsman plunks some bagpipes on the table. The octopus fumbles with the bagpipes for a minute and then backs off with a confused look.

“Ha!” the Scot says. “Can ye nae plae it?”

The octopus looks up at him and says: “Play it? I’m going to sh*g it as soon as I figure out how to get its pyjamas off.”

Snow In Birmingham

Filed under: General — Chris Ross @ 11:34 am

Well, not wanting to feel left out, Birmingham finally subscribed to the “Lets have some snow here” bandwagon. The weather duly obliged and presented us with this. I took these out of the windows of my flat. Nice eh ?

You can create one yourself.

UPDATE:

The warning brought unto us by Mr Bailey:

Harrassment

Filed under: It's funny. Laugh. — Chris Ross @ 9:37 am

Every day, a male co-worker walks up very close to a lady standing at the coffee machine, inhales a big breath of air and tells her that her hair smells nice.

After a week of this, she can’t stand it anymore, takes her complaint to a supervisor in the personnel department and asks to file a sexual harassment grievance against him.

The Human Resources supervisor is puzzled and asks,” What’s sexually threatening about a co-worker telling you your hair smells nice?”.

The woman replies, “Its Keith, the midget.”

The Week Thus Far

Filed under: Going Out — Chris Ross @ 9:37 am

Sunday, having done some PhD work during the day, I ambled over to Rob’s and we watched Notting Hill on channel 4.

Monday, Mike came round and we watched Walking Tall on dvd.

Tuesday, I went to the gym, and then headed over to Maz’s to watch Benny and Joon.

Wednesday, Alex and I went to the gym and then cooked for Maz and Lauren.

Last night, Ant, Bailey, Maz and my good self ambled along to the Soak for a few drinks and to take in their Moulin Rouge evening. (The most amusing part was the dancers who, although wearing very similar out fits seemed to all be dancing to different pieces of music)

During the day times I have been mostly avoiding the cold and working on well, work.

DVD Headers

Filed under: Life — Chris Ross @ 12:53 pm

I have invested in a set of DVDs recently and have been pleased with my purchases.

These are legal DVDs. I bought them. I didn’t download them. I didn’t steal them. I didn’t record them off another person. Legitimate purchases. Why then, do I have to sit through a 30 seconds of text telling me not to copy it ? Why do I need to sit through a 2 minute film telling me that I wouldn’t steal a number of other items so why justify a film ? It is telling me, the purchaser to abide by the law, which, through purchasing the DVD I have already done.

But wait, what about those evil nasty people who download films from the internet ? I mean, they need to see the sign. So those people who put the film up leave the message there, right ? Nope.

It seems to be a worthless gesture that does nothing to upset and piss off those who rent or purchase DVDs.

Mental Note: AJAX and encoding

Filed under: Website — Chris Ross @ 12:47 pm

This is a potential issue that I have solved on some AJAX stuff I am doing.

I am using AJAX to deliver complex forms that have been pre-filled with various information. The information is encoded in UTF-8. The initial page that is delivered had a UTF-8 content defined (both as a meta directive and and the Content-Type: http header), however, the result of the AJAX would take up the SYSTEM default encoding.

It is important to note that the encoding must be set for the AJAX response http header. For the AJAX as well as the initial page. E.g. request.contentType( “text/html; charset=UTF-8″ );

This will mean that all is encoded correctly.

[This is put here to for reference]
[ferite seems to cope ok with information in UTF-8]
